Understanding what the GLD Index measures — and what it doesn’t.
The GLD Index compares LGBTQ+ travel conditions on a scale from 0 to 100. Country scores describe the national environment. City scores add a local perspective.
Legal rights, social acceptance, rule of law and travel comfort.
Explore countries →National context, adjusted by local LGBTQ+ visibility, places, events and tourism signals.
Explore cities →More favourable conditions for LGBTQ+ freedom, visibility and travel comfort. Individual experiences and local circumstances still vary.
Mixed conditions. Local context, personal circumstances and current travel advice matter when planning.
More restrictive conditions and limited travel comfort. Read the local context carefully before planning.
Significant restrictions on LGBTQ+ freedom and visibility. Consult current official advice and detailed local information.
The current public thresholds are High 70–100, Medium 50–69, Low 30–49 and Very Low below 30. These presentation bands are retained from the existing site. The internal methodology uses a different five-category classification; the two should not be treated as interchangeable.
Scores are synchronised from the GLD Index data portal using current published or partner-ready records. Each connected destination shows its recorded components, methodology version and score update date. Where no eligible record is matched, the previous public score is clearly labelled historical. Sync dates do not mean the underlying evidence was reverified.
A score is a comparative signal, not a guarantee of safety, a legal opinion or an assessment of a particular hotel. Consult current official advice and local information.
Read the full disclaimerCountries and territories are ranked separately from cities. Only active, matched destinations with one current published or partner-ready score and a known methodology version participate. Historical scores remain visible but are not ranked. Rankings describe coverage of this index, not every destination in the world.
We compare the precise scores before rounding. Equal scores share the same position (1, 2, 2, 4). Two displayed scores can therefore look equal while their ranks differ. Top 10 lists include all destinations tied at the tenth position; smaller groups show every eligible country.
Continents are discovery groups derived from GLD regions. The Americas combine North America, Latin America and the Caribbean; Asia includes the Middle East. Other assignments follow the GLD taxonomy. Scores of different methodology versions are not combined in one ranking.
