YOUR DESTINATION, IN CONTEXT
Guangzhou has a published GLD City Score of 59/100, in the Medium range.
Guangzhou is one of China’s largest cities, a historic trading port and a core centre of the Greater Bay Area. Its scale and commercial openness shape the visitor experience, but they do not remove the national constraints affecting LGBTQ+ expression and organisation.

The city’s official guide for international visitors presents Guangzhou as a historic cultural centre and a long-standing southern gateway. The Pearl River, traditional architecture, modern business districts and Cantonese food offer distinct ways into the city. Because these areas are widely distributed, planning by district is more useful than expecting one compact visitor quarter.
Sources: Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office — Guide for ForeignersHuman Rights Watch reports growing censorship of LGBT content and tighter pressure on advocacy groups and public events across China. Guangzhou’s size and connections may create social possibilities, but Gaylidays does not infer protected LGBTQ+ space from nightlife, expatriate districts or commerce alone. Specific venues and gatherings require current verification.
Sources: Human Rights Watch — World Report 2026: ChinaGuangzhou’s GLD score is 59/100, with a recorded local-adjustment component of 38/100. The local component adds selected city evidence to China’s national foundation; it does not independently determine the final score. Neither number certifies venues or guarantees freedom from discrimination.

A city score builds on its country’s context and adds local signals such as LGBTQ+ visibility, venues, events and tourism. A higher city score does not remove national restrictions.
