YOUR DESTINATION, IN CONTEXT

Istanbul, Turkey LGBTQ+ Travel Guide & GLD City Score

Istanbul has a published GLD City Score of 40/100, in the Low range.

Istanbul offers waterfront walks, arts districts and an active LGBTQ+ community. Its cultural appeal sits alongside restrictions on Pride gatherings, so it is worth planning with both in mind.

Explore both sides of the city

Start in Beyoğlu for İstiklal Avenue, galleries, cafés and the streets around Galata and Karaköy. Across the water, Kadıköy offers coffee shops, art spaces and bars; nearby Moda makes a good addition to a neighbourhood walk. These are places to explore, not a promise that any particular venue is LGBTQ+-focused.

Connect with the community; approach Pride with care

Istanbul-based SPoD provides LGBTQ+ advocacy and support. Pride and Trans Pride have had programmes in June, but schedules vary by edition: consult the organisers’ current channels rather than assuming a march or venue is available. During the 2026 Istanbul Pride march, Kaos GL reported local bans, police intervention and detentions. The U.S. State Department says consensual same-sex relations are legal in Turkey, while discrimination occurs and legal protections are limited. Check current local information and make your own plans accordingly.
