Pedestrians on the rainbow-painted Skólavörðustígur with Hallgrímskirkja in the distance

GAYLIDAYS · MUST-VISIT PLACES

Rainbow Street · Skólavörðustígur

Street & queer landmark · Skólavörðustígur · City centre · Reykjavík

Follow the rainbow towards Hallgrímskirkja, with time for small shops and a coffee along the way.

Explore Reykjavík’s central streets

Start with a little colour

Let your first Reykjavík walk begin with the rainbow painted along Skólavörðustígur. The colourful stretch turns a familiar city view into a visible expression of support for diversity, with Hallgrímskirkja rising at the far end of the street. Take the photograph, of course, but give yourself a reason to linger beyond it.

A walk with room for detours

The street climbs from the Laugavegur area towards the church, passing shops, galleries and cafés. We’d make it a gentle morning route: browse something made locally, pause for coffee, then continue uphill when you feel ready. The rainbow is one stretch of a working city street, rather than a separate attraction with a ticket or a fixed visiting slot.
